Cat-test setback...

We strive to do our best when evaluating a dog's ability to live with small animals and it seems we got a false positive with miss Leona. She did great the first time she was introduced to the cats but the second time she failed to pass muster and therefore we have decided that it isn't a risk worth taking so we are recommending a home without small animals for her.

All of our dogs are tested at least twice, once when they have had a chance to settle in and again when someone expresses interest. These false positives do not happen often but they do happen so we always exercise caution and advise our adopters to do the same. Remember, we test for their ability to learn to live with small animals, it is up to their new families to ensure that capacity is fully realized. Even dogs that have lived with small animals successfully in the past may not be safe around those with whom they are unfamiliar.

More cat testing results

We had time to evaluate a couple more dogs' compatibility with small animals. The results are below and we have added a graphic to indicate their ability to live with cats or small dogs. Our model for the key was a cat we used introduce the dogs to but who has retired from that position to enjoy his advancing years, thanks Bean!

A boy's best friend is his cat?

And the last of the cat-testing for the week.

Steve test cat tolerant with a little reservation. He has a lot of puppy energy and is very playful but doesn't understand that the cats are not appropriate playmates. His interest is persistent so if he is going to live with cats he MUST go to an approved home with a lot of dog experience.

Brave kitties

Our brave cats deserve a lot of credit. Raised since kittens around the greyhounds they have no fear of them so even when they appear to be tasty morsels they don't provoke the dogs by running. Unfortunately, it would be nice if they would occasionally put a dog in its place so they would learn to respect the cats, but I suppose that you can't have everything. Thanks kitties!

Got kitty?

Thanks to our courageous kitties we were able to test the compatibility of a number of greyhounds with small animals.
