Keep those puppies warm!

With more cold weather rolling in and additional snow expected today it's important to keep your dogs warm. Our dear friend Karen Embler makes quite possibly the most exquisite coats you'll ever have the opportunity to purchase. They are durable, comfortable, warm and washable. You can see some coats modeled below by Stacey but if you are interested it's best to visit Karen's website, Greyt Outdoors, to see more photos and get her contact information.

Please be advised that Karen is working like mad to fulfill orders but each coat is unique and therefore made-to-order so, unfortunately, there's no instant gratification. She will also be taking a little vacation from work beginning December 22nd and finishing on the 29th so get your orders in now and be prepared to be a little patient. It's worth the wait, honestly :)

Another sweet girl enters the adoption program

She's as sweet as Honey... This sweet little girl didn't make it as a racer and won't be celebrating her second birthday until next spring. As you can tell by the pictures, she's already destined to be a Velcro-hound, constantly giving puppy hugs. We're already in love...

Name: Honey
Racing name: Hot lil Honey
Weight: ~60 pounds
Color: Red Fawn
Born: April 7th, 2007

More snow-hounds

Are you ready for more snow? Below are pictures send to us by Kevin and Dave with their hounds Danny, Darrion, Jenny, Biggie and Emily.

Stay safe, it's icy out there!

How about a warm welcome for Slot?!?

We would like you all to help us welcome Slot to the kennel! She started her racing career in West Virginia and then went to Florida before coming home to Oregon to find her forever home. She's a silly and sweet girl who will doubtless be a lot of fun for the lucky family that gets the privilege of taking her home.

Name: Slot
Racing name: Pull them Slots
Weight: 58 pounds
Color: White and Red
Born: May 2nd, 2006

Cat-test setback...

We strive to do our best when evaluating a dog's ability to live with small animals and it seems we got a false positive with miss Leona. She did great the first time she was introduced to the cats but the second time she failed to pass muster and therefore we have decided that it isn't a risk worth taking so we are recommending a home without small animals for her.

All of our dogs are tested at least twice, once when they have had a chance to settle in and again when someone expresses interest. These false positives do not happen often but they do happen so we always exercise caution and advise our adopters to do the same. Remember, we test for their ability to learn to live with small animals, it is up to their new families to ensure that capacity is fully realized. Even dogs that have lived with small animals successfully in the past may not be safe around those with whom they are unfamiliar.

Thank you Paw Prince!

We would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to Mark and Melissa, the proprietors of Paw Prince, for their generous gift of toys and treats to all the dogs in our adoption program waiting for their forever homes!

If you need a place to purchase quality pet supplies in Anchorage give Paw Prince a try and give our love to Jack, one of our adoption alumni.

Dewey in repose

It's our buddy Dewey! He's keeping warm and dry, despite the frigid weather. We're happy to report that he's thriving in his new home.

While you're out playing take it slow and beware the yellow snow...

Bob gets featured!

This week we're featuring the dog with the best ears in the kennel, Bob!

Name: Bob
Racing name: Westcoast Bob
Weight: 77 pounds

Bob is a big sweet squishy lump. He walks very nicely when the leash goes on and is very affectionate. When he came into the kennel he had the most incredible winter coat and he looked, well, plush, but now he's sleek and shiny and ready to go home! Bob needs a home without small animals.

Contribute holiday photos!

Here's one of my moose, it's not a holiday photo because, well, to him, change is bad.

Jan update!

Our girl Jan seems to be doing great in her new home. She's got comfy beds, pajamas and loving people! Hooray for Jan!

Omar returns

After being in a home for a number of months Omar has come back to us. Although he had a fantastic home he exhibited acute separation anxiety and, unfortunately, his family's schedule could not be modified to meet his needs. But that is enough of the negative, Omar is truly a wonderful boy. He is good with cats and dogs of all breeds and sizes, he walked very well on leash, and he has a wonderfully affectionate personality. Indeed, Omar is, with one exception, an idea companion and would be well suited to someone who is either home almost all the time or someone who can take him everywhere.

Holiday food drive

I just bought pet food at 10% off and you can get that discount too! Furever Pets is having their annual holiday food drive. Last year they collected over 3,500 pounds of food for various animal non-profits and this year they want to beat that record. All you have to do is purchase a bag of food of 4 pounds or more to donate to the group of your choice (*ahem* Oregon Greyhound) and you will receive 10% off on both the donation bag and the food you purchase for yourself!

Here is their information:
Furever Pets
1902 NE Broadway St.
Portland, OR 97232
phone: 503-282-4225
email: info@fureverpets.com

More cat testing results

We had time to evaluate a couple more dogs' compatibility with small animals. The results are below and we have added a graphic to indicate their ability to live with cats or small dogs. Our model for the key was a cat we used introduce the dogs to but who has retired from that position to enjoy his advancing years, thanks Bean!

Peggy Sue tested cat tolerant.

Chris tested incompatible with small animals.

Thank you Salty's!

We would like to thank Nancy and Salty's Dog & Cat Shop for generously allowing us to have an adoption event there today! In attendance were Whistle, Sugar, Heather, Kara, Hannah, Dream, Arapaho and Peggy Sue and all had a great time. Whistle really thought that all the toys were for her personal pleasure and had a great time with all of our middle-aged ladies. We would also like to thank everyone who came to visit our lovely ladies, it was a pleasure to meet you all and talk dogs.
